My favorite farmers market stand

Cactuses!

I like seeing the kids get excited about them.

Each of these boys was allowed to pick out one plant.

No TV on weeknights

This is our new thing.

Which means we often sit at the table while we eat—I KNOW, right??—and peruse the newspaper or a book (me) or the New Yorker (Greg). Tonight I was reading this very interesting book, which I found at a secondhand store in Los Angeles.

There's a great part where John Lehmann basically says that Leonard Woolf was money-grubbing because he "grew up in an Anglo-Jewish household"!?

Way to go, John.

Dessert!

I have to keep making cakes until all the leftover icing is used up.

Can't let it go to waste.

Noted this morning

A lady of quality has lost her handkerchief.

Poor George

First Stella died, and now Pierre has disappeared.

Neighborhood

Someone has a nice little shrine.

To . . . something.

Or perhaps they just enjoy stacking masonry.

Found

A penny! Literally both shiny and new.

I am one cent closer to filling that mason jar on the dresser.

Do you need anything from the store?

Just one of these, please.

New bag!

Only one problem: it's too small to hold street finds! And/or bike helmet.

Nice though, right (especially for $20)?

Aw yeah

Hammy's helping us get ready for the party!

Note regarding petting: "She only likes it on the head."

Knitting

A cotton scarf.

So far so good!

On the weekend

We bought a boat! In Maryland!

Then we drove home with it in a rain storm.

Wanted

Someone who will go to an amateur production of Annie with me down the street from my house (it's gonna be awesome!!)

Greg has already confirmed his nonparticipation in this scheme.

Hello beautiful

I kind of want to kiss you on the mouf.

Five Leaves

We waited almost an hour for our food this morning.

But it was SO WORTH IT!

Someone's birthday!

I did in fact make a stencil for this cake.

Big Deal in Little Poland

Beatification.

Garbage books

"Society: The Basics" and "Understanding Abnormal Behavior"—I need these ones.

Thrift store

Hand-tooled belt bearing the legend "Beaver."

Why did I not buy this?

May 11, 2011

I picked up three things on the way home

One of them is not from the store.

Did you guess this one?

I found it in a garbage pile.

It's pretty much blowing my mind right now.

May 10, 2011

That's right

"Madame" Rebecca Roberts.

Manhattan Ave.

I picked these pieces up off the sidewalk, and now they're rooting on the windowsill at home!

Have you ever seen anything cuter?

Than these two?

For serious.

I came across Whitney's blog a while back and was totally smitten by her pictures of her life with Reed (husband) + Tayvee (child) + Zooey (cat). She and Reed visited New York last month and got in touch. For whatever reason I was super nervous to meet them (internet friends—what if they think I am a giant nerd in real life????) . . . but we had a great time. I want to go visit them in Boise!

Yes, BOISE!

YAY INTERNET!!

Do you need pickles

Because I know where they're at.

Fox and Fawn

At the vintage store in my neighborhood I found an amazing summer dress this weekend!

To wit:

Nice crispy cotton. It goes to just below my knees—long and white with a colored yoke and some stripes above the hem.

Thrift store

Brand new leather Tretorns!

Trenny bucks! They are seriously PERFECT.

Can you even call it brunch?

If there's no homemade Sno-ball at the end?

(Don't worry I ate that last piece.)

At the park

A lil squirrel took a peanut from my hand! He reached up with his little paws.

Can you see how he is smiling at me?

B. Kitty

You're back!

Baby plants!

Right-hand windowsill = special experimental nursery.

Featuring cuttings from someone's sidewalk garden in LA (illegally transported out of California in my carry-on):

A sprig lifted from a display plant outside a garden store in Brooklyn (soooo bad!):

From a potted plant in front of an apartment building in my neighborhood:

This one is a cutting from a plant I actually paid for:

These little dudes are also from LA:

And last but not least, these fellas, grown from a "piglet" surreptitously removed from a sow-and-piglets plant at an apartment sale:

I love them all so much!

Every morning I inspect them minutely from a distance of one centimeter, grinning with joy and cackling softly to myself.
